How to Stop Worrying and Start Living Part 2

7 Principles to Stop Worrying and Start Living As a Leader

Introduction

I’ll never forget something my mom shared with me after my dad passed away. She told me, “Your dad worried all the time.” That caught me off guard—he was my best friend, and I had no idea he carried that kind of weight. She explained how he worried about us kids, about our future, and about how things would turn out. It hit me hard because, as a leader, I’ve felt that same burden.

Maybe you have too. Whether it’s worrying about your team, your family, or the uncertainty of what’s ahead, worry has a way of sneaking into our hearts and minds. I’ve learned, though, that worry doesn’t just weigh us down—it chokes the joy and purpose out of life. But here’s the good news: we don’t have to live that way.

Over the years, I’ve discovered some practical, God-centered principles to stop worrying and start leading with confidence and peace. These aren’t just ideas; they’re lessons I’ve lived. I want to share them with you today in the hope that they’ll encourage you as much as they’ve encouraged me.

Pray with Supplication and Thanksgiving

One of the most transformative lessons I’ve learned is to pray with intention. “We pray and don’t panic.” There are two types of prayer he highlights: supplication and thanksgiving. Supplication is bringing your deepest needs before God, surrendering your worries and fears. It’s saying, “God, I can’t handle this, but I know You can.” Thanksgiving, on the other hand, shifts your heart to gratitude, focusing on God’s faithfulness. When I pray this way—asking boldly and thanking Him fully—it calms my spirit and fills me with His peace.

How do we stop worrying and start living?

How do we stop worrying and start living?

1. Seek God First

The journey to overcoming worry begins with acknowledging that we need God’s guidance. Life’s trials often bring us to a place where our own abilities fall short, and it's in this moment we’re invited to rely on a higher strength. When you find yourself overwhelmed, “Pray first.” Bringing your burdens to God not only relieves worry but allows Him to direct your path.

2. Focus on God, Not the Problem

Anxiety grows when we fixate on the obstacles in front of us. Lift our gaze above the problem and focus on God’s promises. Our perspective shifts when we remember God’s greatness and His commitment to our well-being, ultimately lightening the weight of our worries. This shift transforms environments of stress into spaces of faith and hope.

3. Trust in God’s Promises

In times of uncertainty, remind yourself of the promises found in scripture. God assures us of His guidance and provision, and His word gives us confidence that we are not alone in our journey. Hold on to these truths, as they’ll keep you anchored even in the stormiest of times.

4. Cultivate a Heart of Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful antidote to worry. By giving thanks for what God has done, what He is doing, and what He will do, you cultivate a mindset of trust and appreciation. Thanksgiving transforms worry into worship, allowing you to experience peace.

5. Strengthen Your Relationship with Christ

A close relationship with Jesus, the Prince of Peace is so important. When we stay close to Him, we find a calm assurance that keeps us centered, even when circumstances are chaotic. Consistently nurturing this relationship brings the peace we need to lead effectively.

6. Watch Your Words

Our words shape our reality. In leadership, it’s crucial to “make your words work for you, not against you.” Speak life into your situation, speak positively about challenges, and avoid negative self-talk. Remember, life and death are in the power of the tongue.

7. Practice What You’ve Learned

Finally, apply these teachings. It’s not enough to know what to do; we must take action. “Champions do extra,” and leaders are called to go beyond simply understanding principles—they must live them out. Whether facing a small setback or a major life challenge, lean on these principles and put them into practice.

Conclusion: Living Above Worry

As leaders, we set an example for those around us. By choosing faith over fear, we not only free ourselves from the weight of worry but also inspire others to do the same. Take these seven principles to heart, and start living the life of confidence, peace, and purpose God has for you.
