Your Future is in your focus
Introduction
I want to share something with you that has transformed my leadership journey: the incredible power of focus. In today’s world, distractions are everywhere. Social media pings, constant emails, and endless to-do lists can easily pull us away from what truly matters. Distractions keep the word of God from working in my life. All the unfulfilled dreams we've had are result of broken focus.
When I look back at the moments where I achieved my biggest breakthroughs, they weren’t the result of luck or talent alone—they were the result of intentional focus. I want to help you harness this same power to lead authentically, stay on track, and fulfill your God-given purpose.
Why Focus Matters
The Bible speaks about the parable of the sower, where the cares of life choke the word of God and prevent it from flourishing. Doesn’t that sound familiar? We may have all the tools we need to grow, but the distractions around us can smother our potential.
In leadership, distractions come in many forms—well-meaning advice, shiny new opportunities, or even the fear of missing out. But every unfulfilled dream is often the result of broken focus. Let me encourage you: guard your focus fiercely. It’s the compass that will keep you aligned with your calling.
What You Focus On Grows
Whatever you’re focusing on, gets bigger. Exaggeration. The devil is a master at exaggeration. He always make it look bigger and worse than it is by getting us to focus on it all day.
Think about this principle: What you focus on grows. If you spend your days worrying about problems, they’ll feel insurmountable. But if you focus on solutions, potential, and progress, those areas will expand.
Here’s a challenge for you:
Are you focusing on your problems or your potential?
Are you dwelling on your past, or are you building toward your future?
Imagine driving with your eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. You’d crash. The same is true in life. The rearview mirror is small for a reason—it’s meant for quick glances, not sustained focus. The windshield, on the other hand, is wide and open. It represents your future. Look ahead; your best days are still to come.
Staying Focused: Practical Strategies
Let me share some practical ways I stay focused. These aren’t theories—they’re habits that have kept me on track in both my leadership and my personal life:
Know Who You Are
Stop comparing yourself to others. Embrace your unique gifts and calling. One of my mentors once said, “You were born an original—don’t die a copy.”Know Why You’re Here
Purpose is your anchor. Mark Twain said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.” Reflect on why God placed you here.Set Clear Goals
SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound—are your roadmap. Review them daily to stay aligned and motivated.Guard Your Focus
Be intentional about how you spend your time and energy. Ask yourself: “Does this decision move me closer to my goals or further away?”Commit to Lifelong Growth
Growth is not a destination; it’s a journey. What are you reading? Who are you listening to? Who speaks into your life? Surround yourself with mentors who challenge and inspire you.
The Bigger Picture
Here’s what I want you to remember: Your focus is a statement about your values. When you care about the details, your team will too. As Richard Branson once said, “If you place emphasis on getting the little things right, you encourage a culture of attention to detail.”
The small decisions—what you focus on, how you spend your time, and who you allow into your life—compound over time. They build your future.
Conclusion
Your future is in your focus. Every day, you have the choice to fix your eyes on the right things—your calling, your goals, and God’s purpose for your life. Let’s not settle for “good enough.” Let’s pursue excellence.
“Faith does the hard thing.” Keep the faith, and let’s move forward together.
Stay focused. Stay encouraged. And remember: God is for you.
